Shipping Director

SHIPPING DIRECTOR

The Shipping Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the day-to-day operations of the Shipping Department to ensure efficient workflows, high-quality product, and exceptional customer service.

Essential Responsibilities

Shipping Logistics & Operations

  • Lead daily shipping and logistics for all customer orders, including pickups.
  • Prioritize and allocate workload based on daily demands.
  • Collaborate with Shipping Coordinators, Sales & Business Office Teams, and Leadership to meet daily commitments.
  • Serve as primary contact for order discrepancies, quality issues, standards/procedures, and customer returns.
  • Ensure efficient shipping processes and operational excellence.
  • Identify workflow improvements and system simplifications.
  • Manage departmental expenses and set priorities to maximize productivity.

Shipping Preparation & Inspection

  • Oversee preparation and inspection of all customer orders as final quality check.
  • Ensure plant material is properly trimmed, watered, weeded, labeled, pre-priced, inspected for pests, and replaced as needed.
  • Verify paperwork, organization, labeling, staging, and loading accuracy.
  • Maintain proficiency in all Shipping tasks and provide coverage as needed.
  • Keep Building #4 clean, orderly, and efficient.
  • Return excess plants to designated locations to prevent inventory issues.
  • Maximize space utilization and complete shipping-area projects on schedule.

Labor Management & Planning

  • Allocate and adjust labor based on shipping needs.
  • Coordinate with Growing Operations Supervisor to flex labor across the nursery.
  • Support staff and hold them accountable to performance standards.
  • Foster positive team culture and morale.
  • Collaborate on labor planning and budgeting.

Safety & Training

  • Oversee onboarding, training, and development of Shipping team for consistent processes and quality output.
  • Partner with Shipping Coordinators to design and implement training programs, including materials, standards, timelines, and feedback.
  • Communicate and reinforce safe work practices, including rack/truck handling and proper lifting techniques.
  • Monitor compliance with safety regulations through observation and follow-up.
  • Report and resolve unsafe conditions on-site, in transit, or at customer locations with Leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate Degree or equivalent.

Experience:

  • 2–3 years in shipping, logistics, supply chain, warehouse, or similar operations.
  • 1–2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Basic math skills.

Technology:

  • Proficient in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Google Maps, and SBI Growing Software (or similar inventory/production software).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience:
  • Prior Horticulture/Garden Industry experience
  • Knowledge of inter- and intra-state transportation regulations.
  • Experience working with third-party shipping companies / LTL loads
  • Experience working with semi trucks
  • Ability to operate a bobcat
 Language: Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
Certifications: Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

We have a wonderful team of people who work hard every day to supply a top notch product to our customers, who include independent retail garden centers, farm markets, landscapers, municipalities, and public horticulture entities. We are located in Ostrander, Ohio, just 10 minutes north of Dublin and 30 minutes north of the O.S.U. campus. We are within a brief commute from many of the Columbus suburbs including Powell, Marysville, and Delaware.

What we produce and how we do it:

Each year, we produce more than one million finished plants in facilities that include over 95 greenhouses covering 192,000 square feet. In addition, our Propagation Department produces over 700,000 starter plants per year. We are equipped with a 3,200 square foot automated Production Facility with two transplanting lines to maximize efficiency in our plant production. We began using our newly built Shipping Facility in the Spring 2020.
