Why We Love: Aralia cordata ‘Sun King’

Happy New Year and welcome to 2020! What better way to start the year off then by talking about the 2020 Perennial Plant Association’s Perennial of the Year, Aralia cordata ‘Sun King’.

This beautiful shrub-like perennial is sure to brighten up the shaded areas in your garden.  The bright gold compound leaves of this Aralia form a large clump of foliage that can measure between 3-4’ tall and wide.  In mid to late summer, ‘Sun King’ produces tall, white flower spikes that are followed by purple-black berries in the fall.

Aralia ‘Sun King’ makes for a wonderful accent plant in the garden and pairs well Hostas, Ferns, and Brunneras. This plant has shown great drought tolerance and resistance to deer along with the ability to thrive in part or full shade.
