Meet the 2022 Perennial Plant of the Year®: Schizachyrium scoparium and cultivars.
Schizachyrium scoparium, common name Little Bluestem, checks a lot of boxes as to why it has been named the Perennial Plant of the Year®:
- Native to North America – Little Bluestem can be found naturally throughout the majority of the continental United States and the lower provinces of Canada
- Low maintenance – performs well in average, well-drained soils. Drought tolerant. Requires a once a year cut back prior to the next season and that’s it
- Multi-season interests – throughout the entire season, the stems of Little Bluestem are in constant change. Starting the season with blues and greens, transitioning to more pinks and purples in the summer prior to rich fall colors of copper, red and orange. Seed heads in the fall only add to the dramatic effect of this plant.
- Pest and Disease free – this species of plants are relatively pest and disease free.
At Millcreek Gardens, one of our favorites that we are currently offering is Schizachyrium scoparium Standing Ovation. This cultivar produces beautiful blue leaves with hints of green, purple and pink. As fall approaches the foliage turns shades of red and orange. Seed heads are great for texture and provide food for birds and other creatures.
